BJ Ward

New Jersey Poet, Author, Professor of English and Creative writing

Please join us on Tuesday, April 4th at 1pm at the Ridgewood Pub-lic Library for a meeting and a program featuring BJ Ward, a New Jersey poet, author, and professor of English and creative writing.
Here is what New Jersey Pulitzer Prize winner in poetry, Stephen Dunn, says about our guest:   "In poems that both honor and transcend his (New Jersey) blue-collar roots, BJ Ward blends poignancy and humor with downright good storytelling, and takes his place among the bright up-and-coming voices of his generation."
Professor Ward teaches at Warren County Community College and the Governor's School for the Arts in New Jersey. The recipient of four major fellowships, his work has appeared in a host of journals, his books, New Jersey newspapers, and The New York Times. He is charming and fun and loves writing. This multiple prize winner has a special appreciation for New Jersey poets William Carlos Williams, Alan Ginsberg, Robert Pinsky, Walt Whitman, Stephen Dunn, Bruce Springsteen, and so many more.
Bring your friends and family to enjoy this great program and hear how a poet begins and continues right in his own New Jersey back-yard.

Important Message from the President
The proposed changes were voted on at our October meeting and they all passed. These new by-laws and changes will be going into effect soon. An explanation of these changes is provided below. These changes will lower costs as well as create greater efficiency.

The name for our organization will be COLLEGE CLUB OF   NORTHERN NEW JERSEY. The Board also recommended approval by the membership of the following proposed rewording of our Statement of Purpose in our Bylaws. A vote was taken at our first general membership meeting on Tuesday, October 4th.

Statement of Purpose
The College Club is a corporation organized and operated exclusively for charitable and educational purposes within the meaning of Section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended, without profit to any officer or director and the Corporation. The Corporation is incorporated under the laws of the State of New Jersey specifically to develop and expand educational opportunities for study in all phases of higher education through the awarding of annual grants and loans. Subject to the foregoing, the Corporation may also engage in other activities which are permissible by law.
Upon the recommendation of our auditors and lawyers, we are seeking to simplify the corporate structure of College Club. Historically College Club consists of 3 separate entities with 3 separate Tax ID numbers. The Education Fund and the Memorial Scholarship Loan Fund are organized as tax-exempt organizations under Section 501 (C)(3) of the tax code. Contributions to these entities are tax-deductible. College Club itself is organized under Section 501(C) (4). This designation applies to “membership organizations” and while the Club does not pay taxes, contributions are not tax-deductible. This cumbersome organization requires 3 separate tax returns.
By reframing our Statement of Purpose we will be able to apply for 501(c)(3) status for The College Club and combine all 3 units into one single organization. We will not be comingling funds, instead we will be able to maintain separate accounts within the one organization for each of our 3 divisions.
While College Club of Ridgewood is in effect re-incorporating, the Board feels it is appropriate to change our name to reflect the geographic diversity of our membership. Hence, the recommendation to change the organization’s name to College Club of Northern New Jersey.
